Iran Exporting Balochistan’s Date Globally: Farmers
QUETTA: Traders and exporters of Iran continuously visit Balochistan to purchase high quality dates of the province, which is subsequently packed and exported from Iran to the entire world.
This was revealed in a seminar organized by Azat Foundation in collaboration with Actionaid held in connection with World Food Day on Saturday.
Addressing the participants, Assistant Director Agriculture Department Balochistan Abdul Sadiq said that for last many years, Iranian exporters visited Balochistan to purchase high quality dates in huge quantity, which after packing in Iran, was exported at higher prices internationally.
He noted that agriculture sector in Pakistan could not get growth until farmers of every area got diagnosed soil and water of their respective area.
He emphasized the need that only high value crops covering less area should be cultivated in areas, which faced less availability of water for agriculture purpose.
He noted that Kalat, Kan Mehtarzai and Ziarat were best suitable places for seeds production due to their cool weather.
Hamidullah Kakar, the chairman NGOs Association said presently Pakistan was purchasing seeds for crops from multi-national companies and companies from US, Iran and China which remained beneficial as “seed” only for one crop against the local seed which remained beneficial as “seed” for four crops.
Farmers Action Committee leader Abdul Bari said agriculture sector in Balochistan was on the edge of destruction due to prolonged power load shedding, higher prices of fertilizers and pesticides and non-construction of delay action dams to preserve rainwater.
He demanded the federal government to implement its promise and announcement to write off Rs 3 billion agriculture loans against Balochistan’s peasants.
He alleged that middleman exploited the farmers.
